Postgraduate training/education
Our department is one of the largest training centres in Austria for ‘Specialists in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology’. The department has 8 training positions with full authorisation to offer the entire specialist training. Our curriculum emphasises the highest level of training.
After 9 months of basic training and 27 months of training in internal medicine with rotation to other departments of the hospital (or extramurally), the training assistants are trained in all clinical skills required for specialists in internal medicine and rheumatology. In addition, a comprehensive theoretical training and further education programme is offered. This covers all topics relevant to rheumatology, with speakers from our own department and national and international guest lecturers.
Naturally, trainees are expected to contribute to the department's scientific projects. As a rule, such work begins in the final semesters of study and should lead to a diploma thesis or dissertation or to the award of a PhD or Dr med.scient. According to the rules of the Medical University of Vienna, this is a prerequisite for a further career at the department as a medical specialist, senior physician or habilitated university lecturer.
