Postgraduate Training

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is authorized by the Austrian Medical Association to train physicians as specialists in internal medicine, as well as additive specialists in gastroenterology and hepatology, and in internal intensive care medicine. This task is regularly performed by already established specialists and corresponding additive specialists.

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology also participates in the training and continuing education of certified nurses and health care professionals, with students from the nursing schools of Vienna and the surrounding area being used primarily for practical training and receiving appropriate training. Similarly, students of the Academy for the Dietary Service and Nutritional Medical Advisory Service also complete internships at the Clinical Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and some are also supervised during their diploma thesis.

The physicians of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology are offered regular interdepartmental medical education together with the other departments of the University Hospital of Internal Medicine III (» Gastroenterological-hepatological training, Clinical Education, Digestive Research Seminars). The physicians regularly participate actively and also as listeners in specialized regional and international conferences. Similarly, members of the nursing staff, as well as the dietology and nutritional counseling staff, regularly participate in continuing education courses. As an example of a well-established national continuing education event with a continuous character, the Clinical Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology has been organizing and organizing an annual  » Postgraduate course in endoscopy since 1995, which is attended by active endoscopists/gastroenterologists and by endoscopy assistants from all over Austria and some neighboring countries..

Furthermore, in honor of Prof. Dr. Hans Popper and to strengthen the international visibility of multidisciplinary hepatological research at the Medical University of Vienna, the "International Hans Popper Lectureship" was established, which is awarded annually to an internationally renowned research personality in the field of hepatology.
