Peter Mandl completed his medical studies at Semmelweis University, Budapest and at State University New York in Buffalo, graduating with honors. He completed his doctorate in functional neuroscience with honors at the Nathan Kline Institute in Orangeburg, New York and at Semmelweis University, Budapest, before joining the department in 2010.

His research interests include the use of imaging for diagnosing, monitoring and predicting rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, in particular, the utility of ultrasound for the monitoring of inflammation and structural changes in rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and osteoarthritis, and the use of novel positron emission tomography tracers, such as FAPI for gaining a more holistic understanding of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. In addition, he performs comparative imaging research using cadavers, histology and various imaging techniques to better understand the anatomical and histological basis of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases.

He has served as chairman of EMEUNET, the European society for young rheumatologists within EULAR, as well as on the Executive, Scientific and Congress Committees of EULAR. He has convened and is currently convening several EULAR and OMERACT taskforces focus on various aspects of imaging. He is the current co-chair of the OMERACT Ultrasound Working Group and chair of the Imaging in Rheumatology Working Group of the Austrian Society for Rheumatology. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications within the field of rheumatology and musculoskeletal imaging with and H-index of 33, and published a textbook on the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound for the hand. He has organized and served on the faculty of several national and international musculoskeletal ultrasound courses and workshops. He has been the recipient of several prizes and grants by the Austrian Science Fund and the Mayor´s Medical-Scientific Fund of Vienna. He is responsible for the training of physicians at the Division.

He is also the author of five books on fiction, including 3 children´s books and the screenplay for a short animation movie about juvenile idiopathic arthritis.
