Paul Studenic started his research at the Division of Rheumatology of the Medical University of Vienna in 2010 under the supervision of Professor Daniel Aletaha focusing on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). He received his medical degree from the Medical University of Vienna in 2012. During his PhD he continued to focus on patient outcomes research and showed the implications of the differences in factors of importance that exist between physicians and patients to evaluate disease activity. He obtained his PhD in 2018 with honors, at a time when he was training as a specialist physician.

Paul has set collaborations with multiple academic partners within the framework of translational multicentre projects (BTCure, Euroteam, RTCure) integrating candidate biomarkers to patient-oriented outcomes. Thanks to these fruitful collaborations, he widened his research spectrum beyond RA across outcomes in inflammatory arthritis, pre-disease stages, methodological designs and Sjögrens disease.

Paul was also an active working group leader in EMEUNET (the young rheumatology network of EULAR) over many years and dedicated to improving communication, networking and training opportunities of young rheumatologists across Europe. He also participated in several EULAR Task forces with different roles (eg. Convenor, co-methodologist), and by doing so, contributed to more standardized guidance in the management of rheumatic diseases.

Since research is a dynamic field and its contributions to society heavily rely on effective communication, Paul was engaged in EULAR advocacy and is now engaged in the EULAR committees for education and quality of care. Together with renowned patient research partners he co-founded the first EULAR online course for patient research partners as medical advisor. Additionally, Paul performed post-doctoral studies at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, where he worked in a multidisciplinary team focusing on individuals at-risk to develop rheumatoid arthritis.

This established cooperation is still ongoing today and has produced several new opportunities and ideas to better integrate electronic health (ehealth) solutions in patients care and as a result better foster care pathways. In February 2023, Paul received the venia docendi based on his contributions to research and teaching. Paul’s research is supported financially by several international grants, including the two ambitious Horizon-Europe grants SQUEEZE and STRATA-FIT for which he leads two outcome research-focused Work Packages. Paul’s research endeavors were also further recognized by prizes awarded by national and international societies.
