This special outpatient clinic serves the care of acute and chronic problems in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, which have a prevalence of 0.5% of the population. With a minimum incidence of 20/100,000, we can expect 400 new cases/year in our catchment area of 2,000,000. With an average duration of disease of 40 years, we would have to care for about 16,000 patients in the Vienna area.

Our clinical tasks include in particular the clarification of unclear cases, the treatment of difficult, complicated courses and also the indication for a possibly necessary operation, which is why a consultation conference of experts from radiology, surgery and gastroenterology takes place at 14-day intervals. In addition, we also perform exclusion diagnoses of functional GI diseases (intolerances, irritable bowel syndrome), which have a frequency of up to 25% in the population. There will be disease monitoring for IBD using state of the art methods (up to calprotectin stool home testing) and therapy monitoring with determination of drug levels of most essential drugs used. This can primarily improve the effectiveness of these drugs and maintain their efficacy in the long term.
