Endomicroscopy

General Information

Our department has one of a total of only two endomicroscopy systems in all of Austria. This special endoscopic technology for live assessment of superficial tissue layers in the gastrointestinal tract is now used for selected disease patterns, such as Barrett's esophagus or ulcerative colitis.
In addition to purely diagnostic examinations, endomicroscopy has also become an important part of therapeutic endoscopy in our department. It is used immediately before planned endoscopic interventions to characterize the exact area of suspicious lesions before they are removed endoscopically during the same examination. In this way, we have already successfully resected early gastric carcinomas, early squamous cell carcinomas of the esophagus, and Barrett's adenocarcinomas.
