Here, a specially developed device is used, which has been optimized for the examination of the bile ducts or the pancreatic duct (side-view device, duodenoscope). This is advanced into the duodenum to the papilla, the junction of the bile duct and pancreatic duct. The desired ducts can then be probed via the papilla and indirectly visualized under fluoroscopy using contrast medium. It is then possible to remove stones, take samples, treat constrictions or implant tubes (stents). Direct visualization of the bile ducts is also possible (see » Cholangioscopy). Stones can be crushed or tumors treated. You will be made aware of the possibilities and options in discussion with the people treating you.
