How do I get to a dietary consultation or nutrition therapy at the AKH?

If you are receiving medical treatment at the AKH as an outpatient or inpatient, the team of the nutritional medical consultation at the AKH will be happy to assist you. A prerequisite for starting dietary care is a physician's referral. Please contact your attending physician at the AKH if you wish to receive nutritional medical consultation.

Referrals from physicians in private practice (family doctor, internist, etc.) are not sufficient for a dietary consultation at the AKH.

Where can I find dieticians at the AKH?

Dieticians are available to all inpatients at the AKH. If there is a special need for therapy, outpatients are also cared for. There are specialized dieticians for the following areas that require particularly intensive nutritional therapy:

  • University Hospital for Internal Medicine I (Oncology, BMT)
  • University Hospital for Internal Medicine II (Cardiology, Pulmonology)
  • Department of Internal Medicine III (Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Nephrology, Rheumatology)
  • University Department of Dermatology
  • University Department of Neurology
  • Department of Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases
  • University Department of Surgery
  • University Department of Gynecology
  • University Department of Psychiatry
  • University Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine

You can find the responsible dieticians here

Please note that a nutritional medical consultation by the dieticians of the AKH is only possible if you are under medical care at the AKH and have been referred by a physician of the AKH. Referrals from physicians in private practice (general practitioner, internist, etc.) are not sufficient for a dietary consultation at the AKH. You can find more information on the individual specialties here

How do I get an appointment?

Your doctor at AKH will decide together with you whether nutrition therapy or dietary counseling is necessary and will make the referral to the dietician for you. Without a medical referral by a physician at the AKH, a dietological consultation at the AKH is not possible. If you are admitted as an inpatient, you will be visited by a dietician for an initial consultation as soon as possible after you have been referred. If you are in outpatient care at the AKH, you will - depending on the outpatient clinic - receive dietetic care immediately after the doctor's consultation, or your doctor will give you an appointment or a telephone number to make an appointment.

What should I bring to the initial consultation?

Please bring all test results relevant for the consultation that are not available at the AKH (e.g. current blood results, allergy test, lactose intolerance test, fructose malabsorption test, ...) to the initial consultation. If you come for an outpatient dietary consultation, please bring a dietary log with you, which should be kept for a period of at least 3-5 days (a longer period is recommended for allergies and intolerances). This will enable the dieticians to address your eating habits even more individually during the consultation. Depending on the clinical picture, different protocol templates are available.

I am admitted to the AKH and need a special diet. What do I have to do?

If you are about to be admitted as an inpatient and require a special diet due to a medically diagnosed illness (e.g. celiac disease, food intolerances), please state your requirements immediately during the medical or nursing admission interview and bring the relevant findings with you to the admission. In the case of complex therapies, a dietician will discuss the diet with you for detailed clarification. Since the planning of special diets requires a certain lead time, we cannot guarantee that full meals will be prepared on the first day of your stay. From the 2nd day of your stay at the latest, a menu corresponding to your diet will be available.

How do I get an appointment?

Your doctor at the AKH will decide with you whether nutritional therapy or dietetic advice is necessary and will refer you to a dietician. Dietetic advice at the AKH is not possible without a referral from a doctor at the AKH. If you are admitted as an inpatient, you will be visited by a dietitian for an initial consultation as soon as possible after you have been referred. If you are in outpatient care at the AKH, you will - depending on the outpatient clinic - receive dietary care immediately after the doctor's consultation or you will receive an appointment from your doctor or a telephone number to make an appointment.

What should I bring to the first consultation?

Please bring all examination results that are relevant for the consultation that are not available at the AKH to the first consultation (e.g. current blood tests, allergy test, lactose intolerance test, fructose malabsorption test, ...). If you come to an outpatient nutritional consultation, please bring a nutritional log with you, which should be kept for a period of at least 3-5 days (a longer period is recommended for allergies and intolerances). This allows the dieticians to respond even more individually to your eating habits during the consultation. Depending on the clinical picture, different protocol templates are available.
